A cataract is an ophthalmological condition that is caused by a clouding of the natural lens of the eye. This causes blurring of the vision, and reduced perception of colour.

Once the vision becomes worse and it interferes with day to day activities, a cataract extraction is performed in order to remove the cloudy lens and replace it with an artificial lens known as an Intraocular Lens (IOL).The IOL acts as a substitute for the eye’s missing lens.

Glaucoma is a disorder of the intra-ocular pressure and the blood supply to the optic nerve of the eye that can result in a gradual loss of vision usually starting with a loss of peripheral vision.

The condition can be treated with eye drops, pills, laser surgery, traditional surgery, or even a combination of several treatments. The therapy depends on the severity of the condition as well as the medical history and patient profile.

Because a loss of vision caused by glaucoma is completely irreversible, all treatment plans aim to prevent loss of eyesight. When detected early, the condition can be managed and treated to prevent blindness.

The Ophthalmology Department’s team encourages regular eye examination in order to detect any problems at an early stage, and administer treatment plans and remedies as early as possible to increase any patient’s chances of a full recovery.

The hospital provides patients with a large array of general ophthalmic services that includes examination to determine whether they require optical assistance and to

diagnose anomalies in the eyes and other systemic diseases that can lead to reduced vision such as cataract, glaucoma, raised blood pressure or diabetes. Infectious diseases of the eyes such as conjunctivitis, corneal ulceration and orbital infection are analyzed with the latest laboratory tests and treated.
