Rezum Treatment

Rezum water vapour therapy is a more natural, minimally invasive alternative to surgery, which treats the cause of benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH), and leads your life to the fullest.

About Rezum Treatment:

Rezum, also known as convective radiofrequency water vapor thermal therapy, is a non-surgical treatment that uses the natural energy stored in steam to remove excess prostate tissue that is exerting pressure on the urethra and causing benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and other urinary issues. As men age, the prostate cells multiply in number, putting a pressure on the urethra. An enlarged prostate forces the urethra to narrow, causing a variety of urination problems. To address BPH and other sensitive issues, the Rezum treatment uses water vapors or steam to make the prostate smaller and to “reopen” the urethra.

Unlike other treatment options for BPH, REZUM does usually not affect the sexual life and the ability to have an ejaculation. These are major criteria for patients who look for a treatment which minimizes the potential impact on their quality of life.

How’s Rezum Procedure Performed?

The Rezum system involves a hand-held device that passes through the urethra to reach the prostate. This device transports a few drops of waters to convert it into steam or thermal energy that helps damage the offensive cells. As a result, the prostate shrinks, urethra opens and urine flows freely. Over a course of period, the treated area heals naturally and the patients can resume their daily activities. Most patients experience significant improvement in their BPH symptoms within one to three months after the procedure.

At American Hospital Dubai’s Urology Department, our urologic surgeons treat patients with BPH by using Rezum and have had very good results with improvements in symptoms.

What Symptoms Does Rezum Treat?

Rezum system can help if you seek relief from the following symptoms:

• Waking up at all hours to urinate
• Frequent urination
• Constant urge to urinate
• Weak or slow urine stream
• Feeling of incomplete bladder emptying
• Strain while pushing urine out

Not all patients with BPH can be good candidates for the Rezum treatment. BPH along with the presence of other health conditions e.g. kidney disorders, require a specialized intervention by the Urologist who can evaluate symptoms to determine the patient’s candidacy for Rezum Treatment.

The main goal of REZUM is not to remove a huge portion of the prostate – this is reserved to other treatments. REZUM specifically targets the problem caused by the prostate enlargement – the narrowing of the urethra and the resulting difficulties to urinate as well as the specific subjective symptoms.

The objective is to fix the difficulties to urinate – this represents the problem. It is not the goal to minimize the size of the prostate – anyway, the size is just a figure which doesn’t count much but it is the function of the bladder which needs to be maintained and preserved by any kind of BPH treatment. This is very important to understand – under this aspect, REZUM is a smart way to preserve or restore the ability to urinate and to avoid medication with a little effort and minimal side effects.

Is Rezum Therapy Right for Me?

The best way to find out is by discussing your symptoms with a doctor who will determine if Rezum Water Vapor Therapy is a good option for you. We need to perform few investigations to find out all details about your current situation and to define your eligibility for REZUM.

There might be various reasons to consider REZUM for men in different age and stages of life:

REZUM has been made for men who do not want to accept the multiple potential side effects of medical prostate treatment which can significantly affect the quality of life. Hence, REZUM could be a good alternative for the younger, active man who has prostate problems who is not willing to accept eventual loss of ejaculation or deterioration of sexual life. Others might dislike the concept of an eventually “lifelong” medication to maintain the ability to urinate but seek for minimally invasive options to fix the problem, at least for a good while. Again, other patients might not even be eligible for the conventional BPH operations due to their comorbidities and risk profile.

REZUM can be performed under sedation (minimal form of anesthesia) or even under local anesthesia only – hence, it might be the only option for high-risk patients to regain their ability to void. The procedure takes only 10 – 15 minutes, is performed in the operation theatre as a day case.

REZUM treatment does not exclude any other treatment options in future.

Things to Remember:

After the procedure, the patient must continue oral antibiotics as prescribed by a doctor. In case the patient has been on any prostate medication before, it will have to be continued for another while.
Very important to have in mind is – the effect of REZUM will not occur instantly but only by time since the obstructive tissue will have to shrink. Hence, it could be even more difficult to urinate immediately after the procedure – the relief will come a bit later. In any way, we will follow up regularly to monitor the progress after REZUM.

• The patient can have a catheter for a few days to ease urination during healing.
• Avoid activities that can cause any physical stress in the prostate.
• Consult the doctor in case of experiencing any discomfort or irritation in the treated area.
• Follow a healthy diet plan to improve healing and regain strength.
