Valvular Heart Disease

Severe heart valve disease doesn’t wait; you shouldn’t either. Whether you need a diagnosis, treatment, surgery or ongoing management, we provide personalized gold standard cardiac care.

Valvular heart diseases (VHDs) are characterized by damage or defect in one of the four heart valves, which are mitral, aortic, tricuspid, and pulmonary. VHDs can be present at birth or acquired at a later stage of life. These are among the most predictable causes of heart failure and sudden cardiac death. They have been classified into two groups: primary VHDs exhibit abnormalities of valve structures and secondary VHDs indicate vascular deformation that affects the functioning of valves. The diseased valves cause abrupt blood flow with improper force in the opposite direction at the wrong time.

VHDs generally is progressive and require immediate adequate treatment for the management of symptoms and prevention of possible cardiac complications.

Heart Valve Disease Signs and Symptoms:

Many of the symptoms accompanied by VHD are similar to those associated with congestive heart failure. These include:

  • Shortness of breath and wheezing even after limited physical exertion
  • Swollen feet, ankles, legs, hands, or abdomen
  • Palpitations and heart fluttering
  • Chest pain
  • Fatigue, dizziness, or fainting
  • Fever
  • Rapid weight gain

Valvular heart disease symptoms can either occur suddenly or develop over time, depending upon how quickly the disease advances. It may not exhibit any symptoms if the condition develops slowly. Furthermore, the severity of the symptoms may not be linked with the severity of the valve disease; for example, severe valve disease may not produce any severe symptoms and conversely, even a small valve leak can generate severe symptoms.

Causes for Heart Valve Disease:

Different factors cause different types of valve disease; some are congenital and present at birth, while others may be developed later in life. Some of the frequent causes that lead to VHD are:

  • Aging, as degeneration of heart tissues, ensues
  • Rheumatic fever, Bacterial endocarditis, Carcinoid tumors, Rheumatoid arthritis, Systemic lupus erythematosus, Syphilis and Atherosclerosis
  • High blood pressure or hypertension
  • Heart attack and diabetes
  • Diet drugs and certain medicines to treat migraine headaches
  • A history of radiation therapy for cancer treatment

Diagnosis for Heart Valve Disease:

While at AHD, your doctor can perform a physical examination, take a thorough medical history, and advise on a number of tests to diagnose valvular heart disease. For example Angiogram, Electrocardiogram (also called an ECG or EKG), Stress testing, Chest X-rays, Cardiac catheterization, CT scans, Heart MRI, and Blood tests.

Heart Valve Disease Treatment Options:

Your doctor discusses with you a valvular heart disease treatment in detail before commencing it. It focuses on reducing the workload on the heart and providing relief from distressing symptoms.

Generally, cases with mild heart valve problems with no symptoms don’t require any medication but regular check-ups to see if VHD deteriorates. On the other hand, patients with severe and symptomatic VHD usually call for mechanical intervention including medication, intensive treatment such as valve repair or replacement surgery, or a combination of both. A number of minimally-invasive cardiac surgeries performed at the Cardiac Unit at American Hospital Dubai are:

  • Atrial Septal Defect Closure
  • Mitral Valve Repair and Replacement
  • Aortic Valve Replacement

The listed intensive treatments are determined on the basis of age, general health, and the type and severity of heart condition.
