Water Birth Delivery

Labor in water has become increasingly popular and for good reasons in recent years. At American Hospital Dubai, the midwife-led water birth facility provides quality and compassionate care to make a childbirth experience more comfortable. If you want to benefit from hydrotherapy, along with the benefits of delivering your baby in a hospital, schedule your appointment today.

During a water birth, a woman experiences labor and delivery in a birth-pool or tub filled with warm water. While it can be administered at home with the assistance of a mid-wife, a lot of women prefer to go to hospitals or birthing centers for the delivery of their babies, for a number of reasons, the main being the availability of pre-natal, post-natal, or neo-natal care facilities. It is widely believed that this particular birthing option reduces the pain of labor and regulates the intensity of the contractions by creating a more relaxing and soothing environment for the expectant mother.

Advantages of Water Birth:

Women who have delivered babies in naturally soothing birthing pools report to have experienced reduced stress of childbirth along with the following advantages:

  • Shortened labor duration
  • Reduced pressure on their abdominal muscles
  • A gravity-free environment allowing free movements inside the tub
  • Minimal tearing in the perineal tissue (or lesser severity of vaginal tearing)
  • No significant fluctuations in blood pressure
  • Emotionally and clinically advantageous experience for both mother and child

Ever since the inception of our Water Birth facility, tons of new mothers have endured labor and delivered babies in naturally soothing birthing tubs at American Hospital Dubai. While at our dedicated birthing facility, the Water Birth is executed under the guidance and supervision of a highly trained midwife. Needless to mention that we’re among the region’s leading facilities to offer hydro-birthing as a natural alternative for low-risk mothers.

How Does Water Birth Work?

A peptide hormone and neuropeptide acts as a chemical messenger in the brain and helps regulate the intensity of contractions during childbirth. When a woman submerges in the warm water of a birth pool, there occurs a chemical and hormonal response inside the body. Once released, it results in the increased production of pain-inhibiting endorphins which are again chemicals released by the body to relieve stress and pain. Endorphins keep the mother into an altered state of consciousness, makes pain less intense, and allows the body to do what it needs to do.

Please be noted that the aquatic birth option is planned well in advance, and it’s not meant for every pregnant woman. Only low-risk pregnancies are considered ideal candidates while women with high blood pressure, diabetes, or a history of cesarean deliveries are considered high-risk cases. Also, in cases where birth progresses into high risk and medical intervention becomes indispensable for the mother, your midwife will proceed with a well-conceived plan in collaboration with obstetricians, anesthetists, and other specialists associated with American Hospital Dubai.

Waterbirth is the process of laboring and/or giving birth in a specifically designed birthing pool. At AHD, Waterbirth is an additional facility if you choose natural childbirth delivery through water immersion with our highly skilled nurse-midwives.

The Obstetrics and Gynecology Department of American Hospital offers a dedicated birthing facility where women desiring for natural childbirths, especially Waterbirth, are accommodated with a hygienically proven birthing pool and midwife-led compassionate care throughout labor and delivery. While at AHD, you’re also granted access to complete medical-care facilities.

Only your midwife or doctor can determine your eligibility for water immersion, depending upon your health and that of your baby. However, you’re considered eligible if you meet the following criteria:

  • Able to provide consent
  • Healthy low-risk pregnancy
  • Singleton fetus in cephalic (head first) presentation
  • Be in spontaneous labor between 37 and 42 weeks of pregnancy
  • Normal fetal heart rate

Many women find that immersion in water during labor helps them relax and manage pain. While some women choose to give birth in the water, others only experience labor pains (contractions) in the tub. Some of the advantages associated with labouring and giving birth in water include:

  • Promote relaxation and conserve energy
  • Reduce the need for drugs and interventions, particularly epidurals
  • Diminish stress hormones
  • Reduce pain by increasing the production of endorphins (pain relievers)
  • Relieve tired muscles and stress
  • Speed up labor

Unfortunately, you cannot receive any intravenous pain medication or epidural when you’re laboring in water. If you decide to have pain medication while being immersed in the pool, your midwife or doctor will recommend you to exit the birth pool and deliver the baby in a bed.

We follow rigorous guidelines to keep Waterbirth safe during Covid-19. We use disposable sheets and cleanable equipment to prevent infection and ensure the highest standards of hygiene. Additionally, we use monitors that work underwater to track fetal heart rate. Also, your care team at AHD will work with you to safeguard the health of you and your baby during Waterbirth.

However, it is recommended to get in touch with your doctor or midwife when you are in labor and discuss the appropriate time to consider getting into the water.

You’re encouraged to get out of the birthing pool to walk around or use the bathroom at regular intervals. In case your midwife or doctor suspects any problem that requires further investigation, you may be requested to exit the pool.

As a routine practice, we have a team of midwives, obstetrics providers, and support staff who will help you make arrangements, monitor your labour, and supervise your delivery through water immersion.

If complications develop leading to a C-section or other intervention, a physician is always available to ensure your safety and that of your baby.

Yes, if you choose so. Since the physical closeness of new parents can be a special experience, we allow your partner to participate in the water immersion with you and extend support to you as you push and deliver.

If you have chosen Waterbirth with a nurse-midwife at AHD, you’ll have a private birthing suite with home-like settings. The birthing tub has a soft floor with high soft sides and offers plenty of space for your partner. Water is kept warm, while an additional shower is installed to help you manage labor pain.

If you would like to plan a Waterbirth, talk to your OB provider at American Hospital. Your doctor will review your pregnancy history, screen you for infections, and ask you to sign a consent form. You can schedule an appointment with an Obstetrician and Gynecology Specialist or Consultant online or via call at +97143775500.
