الحساسية عند الأطفال

While allergies come with great discomfort, children are unable to participate in their daily activities. Your child must be seen by the Physician immediately if bothered by constant nasal congestion, sneezing, difficulty in breathing, itchy skin, watery eyes or inflammation, to avoid any complications or major impact on quality of life.

About Pediatric Allergy:

Allergy and Immunology is a medical subspecialty that diagnoses treats and manages allergies, asthma, and immunologic disorders including primary immunodeficiency.
Allergies are the result of a body’s immune system and develop when a body comes in contact with allergy-producing substances (allergens). Each body has a self-defense mechanism, so when it sees any agent as a threat, the immune system goes into self-protection mode, fights against potentially harmful substances, and sets off an allergic attack in the body. Allergy attacks could be mild to life-threatening and require adequate medical intervention to be kept in control.

Some of the common types of pediatric allergies are:

Seasonal allergies in children: These are caused by pollens and spores that enter the eyes, nose, and throat, and are accompanied by itchy eyes, stuffy or runny nose, chest congestion, sneezing, sore throat, and other symptoms. Seasonal allergy can be treated by taking preventive measures to minimize the exposure to triggers and by allergen immunotherapy to prevent progression.
Food allergies in children: Developed by the body’s abnormal response to certain foods, food allergy can cause vomiting, diarrhea, cramps, swelling, eczema, swelling of lips or mouth, and difficulty in breathing. A doctor usually advises to watch out for foods that can cause symptoms to prevent food allergy in children and would recommend using life-saving medication in the event where exposure leads to a severe allergic reaction.

Children's skin allergies: Children with skin allergies suffer from rashes, hives, and swelling which can be triggered by a number of factors such as: pet dander, mites, pollutants, chemicals, drugs, perfumes, paints, and the list goes on.

Causes of Pediatric Allergies:

An allergy may never be developed the first time your child’s body is exposed to an allergy-producing substance. It is by repeated exposure over time that the body’s immune system becomes sensitized, and shows allergic reactions even by very limited exposure to a very small amount of a certain agent, as it can no longer tolerate allergens.
There are a lot of triggers that can lead to an allergic reaction in your child. They have been classified into various groups as:

  • Outdoor allergies, caused by trees, plant pollen, insect bites, or stings
  • Indoor allergies occur by dust mites, pet dander or animal fur, cockroaches
  • Irritants such as perfumes, fresh paints and varnish, smoke, car exhaust, and chemicals, etc.
  • Food allergies, triggered by cow’s milk, wheat, eggs, soy, fish, and nuts
  • Medications, maybe for treatment of other diseases/illnesses
  • A family history of allergy

Symptoms of Pediatric Allergy:

  • Symptoms vary from case to case, which means symptoms that appear in one case with a specific allergy may not show up in another case of the same allergy. While allergies may affect eyes, ears, nose,

mouth, throat, lungs, skin, or gastrointestinal tract of a child, they may lead to the following consequences:

  • Stuffy or runny nose, watery or puffy eyes, swelled face
  • Sneezing or coughing
  • Trouble breathing and throat swelling
  • Itchy skin, redness, or even tiny bumps oozing or weeping fluids
  • Stomach-ache, nausea, or vomiting
  • Nasal and chest congestion and the list continues

If you notice your child is having any of the above symptoms, it’s time to consult an allergist. Early identification of childhood allergies will enable your doctor to advise you on the right treatment plan so your child could manage symptoms, take control of the condition, and have an improved quality of life.
