Dialysis For Adults And Children

What is dialysis?

Dialysis is a medical procedure that enables your body to eliminate extra fluid and waste products from your bloodstream when your kidneys are not functioning well. By undergoing dialysis treatment, your body can continue to carry on with essential functions usually performed by the kidneys, such as eliminating waste and extra fluids in your body to prevent toxins build-up, maintaining proper levels of minerals in the blood (potassium, sodium, calcium, etc) and blood pressure.

Dialysis can be given in a hospital, a specialized dialysis center, or at home, depending on your medical condition and doctor's assessment.

Who needs dialysis?

People with severely impaired kidney function, kidney failure, or End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) require regular dialysis sessions.

Kidney failure can be gradual or sudden and can be caused due to unchecked diabetes, blood pressure, genetic triggers, illness, or injury. In sudden kidney failure due to illness or injury, dialysis is required until the patient recovers, and their kidney function normalizes.

What are the types of dialysis?

There are two kinds of dialysis procedures:

Hemodialysis (HD): In this procedure, blood from one of the patient's major blood vessels (either in the arm or leg) is routed through a tube into a dialysis machine to be filtered by a dialyzer or a special filter called an artificial kidney. The dialyzer removes waste products, excess fluid, and electrolytes from the blood, and the filtered blood is then transferred back into the patient's body.

Hemodialysis is usually performed in a hospital or at a dialysis centre; based on your kidneys' condition, your doctor will recommend the number of sessions per week. Each dialysis session lasts three to four hours, and typically a patient might need up to three sessions a week based on their age, kidney function, and other parameters.

Peritoneal Dialysis (PD): Peritoneal dialysis requires no external machine to clean the blood. Instead, the in-body process involves using the peritoneal membrane, a lining in the abdomen that acts as a natural filter. A sterile solution called dialysate is introduced into the stomach through a catheter attached to the abdomen, and waste products and excess fluids diffuse into the dialysate. After a specific time, the dialysate is drained from the body into a waste bag, thus ridding the waste products. The catheter, which the doctor places well before the start of the self-administered dialysis, stays clamped to the patient's abdomen and, after each session, is capped.

Each session is termed an 'exchange', and the patient can do several exchanges in a day, and while the dialysis is on, they can read, watch TV or nap.

If the exchange is done at night while the patient sleeps, they can use an automated machine that does the job.

A significant advantage of Peritoneal Dialysis is that it allows for greater convenience and flexibility for patients and their families.
