علاج سرطان المريء

Esophageal cancer is a serious and complex type of cancer; however, you should know that the survival rate is improving. Also, your chances of recovery from esophageal cancer become much higher if it is diagnosed early, and you don’t essentially have to endure discomfort and pain.

About Esophageal Cancer

Esophageal cancer develops inside the esophagus - a hollow muscular tube that transports food and drinks from the mouth to the stomach. Cancer occurs when the cells lining the esophagus get damaged or affected by the change in the genetic material they carry. As a result, abnormal cells produce mutations and replicate rapidly. They then transform into a tumor and leads to the formation of cancer. If undiagnosed, the patient may experience complications of oesophageal cancer as it can spread to other organs of the body as well.

Esophageal Cancer Causes:

The precise causes of oesophageal cancer are not known, but there are several identified risk factors that can place anyone at a higher risk for the disease. These may include:

  • Gastro-Oesophageal Reflux Disease (GORD)
  • Barrett’s esophagus
  • Excessive smoking and consumption of alcohol
  • Poor diet
  • Obesity
  • Exposure to chemicals and pollutants such as soot, metal dust, vehicle exhaust fumes, and silica dust among many others, etc.

Esophageal Cancer Symptoms:

At initial stages, you might not experience any signs of esophageal cancer symptoms. As it grows, you may feel the following symptoms:

  • Regurgitation
  • Vomiting blood
  • Chest pain
  • Coughing that keeps getting worse
  • Hoarseness
  • Difficulty swallowing solids or liquids
  • Heartburn or indigestion
  • Weight loss without compromising on the amount of food intake

Types of Esophageal Cancer:

Two common types of cancer that can develop in the esophagus are:

  • Adenocarcinoma: Patients having Barrett’s esophagus are more prone to developing this type of cancer.
  • Squamous cell carcinoma: This type develops if squamous cells that surround the esophagus get affected.

If you are referred to American Hospital for the investigation of Oesophageal cancer, your consultant will advise you on a couple of tests, based on your symptoms, in order to make an accurate diagnosis. Tests may include gastroscopy, PET-CT scan, biopsy and others.

The cancer staging system and diagnosis continue to evolve and so is the treatment. Your doctor should be able to help you make a decision on the treatment that is right for you.

Esophageal Cancer Treatment:

Treatment for oesophageal cancer can largely vary from case to case and takes into account several factors such as the stage of cancer and the general health of the patient. If you are diagnosed with cancer, you should expect:

  • Surgery, which is performed for the removal of an affected area
  • Radiotherapy to kill cancer cells using high-energy rays
  • Chemotherapy to destroy cancer cells, and prevent them from affecting other parts
  • Biotherapy - a new treatment for esophageal cancer that involves more targeted therapies to enable the body to fight against the disease
