عملية الزائدة الدودية

The appendix is a small tube-like organ that lies in the lower right-hand side of the abdomen, connected to the large intestine or colon where faeces is formed. While its function is largely not known, it may cause appendicitis which begins as a pain in the abdomen only to become sharp and persistent over time. The condition calls for an emergency visit to the hospital and requires surgery for the removal of appendix from the body promptly and safely. If the inflamed organ perforates, it may cause severe infection within the abdomen and even throw a life at risk.

Although it’s unclear why we have an appendix, but removing it doesn’t harm the body and you can live without acquiring any health issues after getting appendix surgery done.

Causes of Appendix Inflammation:

The known causes of appendicitis is the blockage of appendix that may occur due to some food residue, stool contents, intestinal worms or trauma. Contents may get trapped in the appendix and block it, which cause the appendix to swell gradually and get infected by bacteria. Bacteria multiply rapidly in that particular environment causing a serious infection in the abdomen. So, if there’s any delay in the appendix operation - it may burst while all intestinal contents will leak into the abdominal cavity.

Whether the cause of appendix inflammation is known or not, it is wise to get appendix treatment as early as possible.

Symptoms and Diagnosis of Appendicitis:

The most apparent symptom of appendix inflammation is the beginning of pain around belly button that moves towards right-hand side of the abdomen. This can come and go at first, but become severe and sharp quickly. Other symptoms associated with appendicitis are:

  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhoea or constipation
  • Increased urge for urination
  • Running a fever
  • Loss of appetite.

However, there’s no easy or foolproof test but a series of diagnostic tests like blood test, imaging tests, ultrasound or CT scan that are carried out for investigation, diagnosis, and determination of treatment.

Appendix Treatment:

Once the diagnosis is made, the surgeon then determines the kind of surgical procedure (appendectomy) to perform, based on the complexity and nature of a case. Traditionally, there are two methods to perform the surgery:

  • Laparoscopic appendectomy: This tends to be a minimally invasive appendix removal surgery, and is one of the most commonly performed appendix operations in Dubai. The procedure involves only a few tiny incisions in the abdomen for the removal of appendix from the body, and has quick recovery time.
  • Open surgery: Sometimes, complications in appendix require open surgery, which involves making a single large cut in the abdomen for effective and thorough cleaning of the abdominal cavity from bacteria.

Appendix Recovery:

The recovery time depends on the type of surgical method performed to treat appendicitis. It tends to be short with simple procedures, and up to 3 weeks with complicated operations to enable patients get back to their normal lives.
