Sleep Apnea is a disorder that involves the interruption of normal breathing where breathing stops and starts during sleep or may interrupt the sleep. There are three main kinds including Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA – most common type), Central Sleep Apnea and Complex Sleep Apnea Syndrome.

The Polysomnography Known As Sleep Study

The Sleep Study is an overnight non-invasive diagnostic test procedure for the evaluation and analysis of a suspected sleep disorder and/or sleep related breathing disorder performed in a specialized clinical setting of the hospital Sleep Laboratory.

It involves a continuous monitoring and recording of the central (brain) events, cardiac (heart) events and respiratory events or breathing patterns (lungs) during the entire duration your sleep. In addition, there are other sleep events such as the arm and leg movements and the blood oxygen levels which are monitored and recorded during study.

The Sleep Study will require a minimum of 8 hours sleep to complete the test procedure. There will be electrodes and sensors which will be attached to your body that will capture and record the sleep related events for the entire duration of the test procedure. The certified Sleep Technologist will be conducting the Sleep Study along with the support of the Sleep Medicine Physician.
