American Hospital Dubai’s Thyroid Cancer Center is a one-stop-clinic offering medical services and professional treatments for patients with Thyroid Nodules.
With a high rate of success in Thyroid Cancer treatment over the past 23 years, our resources and full range of services are dedicated to identifying cancerous Thyroid Nodules and administering appropriate treatment plans based on the nature and stage of the disease.
Backed by the hospital’s dedicated multidisciplinary medical board, the center is home to a group of skilled Thyroid and Parathyroid Disease specialists, surgeons, oncologists and nurses that assess each patient and follow up on their progress.
Most commonly detected in young adults, nodules found in the anterior part of the lower neck are often associated with the thyroid. Over 95% of those will be diagnosed as benign and removed only as a precaution. The more malignant tumors progress rather slowly, which greatly contributes to the higher treatability of Thyroid Cancer. However, early detection and diagnosis remain key elements for a successful treatment plan.
The standard regimen administered for cancerous nodules is thyroid surgery followed by closely-monitored radio iodine treatment. Of course, insuring the operation is performed by a highly-qualified surgeon is essential to successful thyroid cancer management and more conducive to full recovery.
Diagnosis and Treatment
Neck lumps are first referred to a Head and Neck specialist. Following the detection of a thyroid nodule, physicians will run a clinical assessment that includes a neck ultrasound and a thyroid hormone blood test. The next steps will depend entirely on the test results.
If the thyroid gland is found to be hyperactive and producing an overload of hormones, the patient is referred to an endocrinologist for a more detailed prognosis.
If the nodule is judged to possess suspicious and unusual characteristics, fine-needle aspiration is usually administered. In that case, a small needle is inserted inside the nodule for a few seconds to extract cells for diagnosis.
In the occurrence of thyroid cancer, surgery by a highly-qualified physician is the standard. The outcome of the operation depends entirely on the surgeon’s expertise and skills.
Following the surgery, our team determines whether or not post-operative radio iodine ablation is recommended. If it is, patients receive oral radioactive iodine tablets and remain in the hospital for up to 3 days in order to minimize the risk of contamination.
While less common, advanced stages require chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy.
Naturally, long-term follow-up minimizes the risk of complications and increases full recovery chances.
American Hospital Dubai’s Thyroid Cancer Center is led by a multidisciplinary team of qualified and certified physicians. The board includes ENT Head and Neck surgeons, endocrinologists, radiologists, pathologists, nuclear medicine specialists, medical oncologists and radiotherapists.
Validated as experts in their respective fields, the team members hold general meetings every fortnight where they assess each case individually, in order to ensure a close patient monitoring process is in place as well as accurate treatment administration.

Commonly referred to as heart disease, cardiovascular disease is a label used to portray a range of illnesses and conditions that directly affect the heart. These include blood vessel diseases like coronary artery disease, arrhythmia and genetic heart defects, among others. If untreated, blocked or restricted, blood vessels can cause heart failure and cardiac arrest, angina or even a stroke.Cardiovascular conditions can involve different parts of the heart such as the arteries, the valves and the muscle, and require heart specialists to administer treatments or surgeons to perform elaborate operations in the case of advanced heart disease.
While they may vary from one patient to another, the most common symptoms of heart disease are:
- Chest Pain or Angina in the arm and/or neck and/or back.
- Profuse Sweating
- Acute Nausea
- Heartbeat Irregularities
Heart disease diagnosis relies on each patient’s medical history and records as well as physical examinations, blood tests and internal scans. As a cardiology hospital, we at the American Hospital in Dubai strictly advise against self-diagnosis and urge all patients to seek medical expertise should they experience any unusual symptoms.
Heart disease treatments depend strictly upon the severity of the condition. They include lifestyle changes, dietary modifications, prescribed medicine, medical treatments, surgical procedures and post-surgery cardiac rehabilitation.Lifestyle changes and Dietary Modifications:
- Smoking: Heart specialists have always advised against smoking. In cardiology, the use of tobacco can increase the risk of Cardiovascular Disease or worsen existing symptoms. Secondhand smoke can also cause severe damage to your health.
- Healthy Diet: Diets that include a lot of fat can cause a strain on the vascular muscle and lead to blocked blood vessels. In order to prevent heart diseases or rehabilitate your body after you have suffered a cardiac episode, you should change to a healthy diet that includes vegetables and fruits, whole grains, low-fat dairy products and protein-rich foods such as lean meats, nuts and seeds.
- Physical Activity: A well-planned physical activity routine can lower the risk of cardiovascular disease such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure and excess weight diabetes. After a cardiac episode, our heart specialists can recommend a workout routine that fits the patient’s physical needs and limitations.
- Maintaining Weight: Obesity and weight conditions can often lead to heart disease and failures. Daily calorie intakes should be regulated or limited, depending on the patient’s needs. As a cardiology hospital, dietary plans are part of our treatments options.
- Stress & Depression: Stress and depression can often lead to unhealthy coping mechanisms such as excessing drinking, smoking, or even bingeing, which can in turn lead to heart diseases and cardiac arrests. Learning how to manage stress and cope with mental conditions is necessary to improve physical and emotional health.
Medical Treatments:When lifestyle changes aren’t enough, our specialists will prescribe medicine and special treatments to alleviate your symptoms and improve your condition. These will help reduce your heart workload and relieve the symptoms, decrease chances of ulterior heart episodes and cardiac arrests, lower cholesterol and blood pressure levels, prevent blood clots, and in some cases, delay the need for procedures or surgeries. At American Hospital Dubai, we advise you to take all of your medicines as prescribed.
In advanced stages of cardiovascular disease, you may need procedures to treat your condition. Our team of skilled and experienced heart specialists maintain the best cardiology center in Dubai. They will take the time to discuss your options with you and determine the right treatment and procedure for your specific condition.
Following your procedure, your doctor may prescribe a detailed rehabilitation program to maintain your progress and restore your health. A cardiac rehabilitation regimen may include lifestyle and dietary changes as well as medical treatments and follow-up examinations. Our team of doctors, nurses, health specialists, physical therapists, nutritionists and psychologists work together with the patient, abiding by their medical history and official diagnosis to decide on the best course of action and determine the most suitable rehab program.

Bariatric / Weight Loss Surgery
DISEASE AND TREATMENT
At the American Hospital Dubai, we offer bariatric (weight loss) surgery in order to help people with morbid obesity, especially those who have tried to lose weight but did not succeed and those who have difficulty exercising due to obesity and those whose quality of life is seriously compromised due to weight related complications.
Through bariatric surgery, patients can retake control of their health by minimizing the amount of food their stomachs can hold. Our specialized doctors have performed countless numbers of weight loss surgeries using minimally invasive techniques known as laparoscopic surgery and offer a variety of surgical procedures, including laparoscopic Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy (Gastric Sleeve), laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding(Lap Band) and laparoscopic Roux en Y Gastric Bypass (Gastric bypass). With each surgery having its own benefits, the patient’s individual health condition will be evaluated in order to choose the most appropriate procedure.
A person is obese if their BMI (Body Mass Index) is 30 or above, whereas a patient who is morbidly obese will have a BMI of 40 or above – roughly equivalent to 45kg over their ideal body weight. The BMI highlights the relationship between a person’s weight and his or her height. Typically, weight loss surgeries are performed on patients who are morbidly obese or have a BMI of 35 or above. However, patients who suffer from a comorbid condition such as diabetes or hypertension are also viable candidates for weight loss surgery.
There are numerous obesity related conditions, both physical and mental, that can be cured or resolved through weight loss surgery, namely:
- Type 2 diabetes
- Heart failure
- Gall stones
- Gastro esophageal reflux disease
- Sleep Apnea
- High Cholesterol
Before a patient is accepted for surgery, they must undergo a thorough medical evaluation in order to rule out any other potential causes of weight gain, such as genetic ,metabolic or endocrine causes and assess their suitability for surgery. Various other tests such as blood work up, electrocardiogram (ECG) and anesthesia evaluations are all carried out before surgery.
It is also expected that patients looking to undergo surgery will have already tried weight loss through a determined effort of diet and exercise. If this is not the case, doctors will advise that patients see a nutritionist and get dietary advice. Additionally, sleep studies are undertaken to rule out sleep apnea. Patients will also attend bariatric support group meetings to understand the whole process and share their own experiences.
The American Hospital Dubai offers three types of procedure. Your surgeon will help you decide the best option through a detailed discussion and evaluation concerning a variety of factors including, age, BMI, medical history and other related conditions.
Laparoscopic Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy
This operation involves medical stapling to create a smaller sleeve of the stomach, reducing its size by around 80%. Due to the smaller and more restricted nature of the stomach pouch, the volume of food that can be consumed is greatly limited, although digestion and absorption continues as normal. Naturally, this helps to reduce weight due to an overall decrease in calories.
As well as reducing the size of the stomach, this surgery also has a significant effect on gut hormones, impacting a variety of features, including fullness, hunger and blood sugar level control, making the vertical sleeve gastrectomy an effective measure against type 2 diabetes.
- A short recovery period.
- Induces desirable transformations regarding gut hormones.
- An effective measure against obesity and other health related diseases.
- A chance of vitamin deficiencies.
- The operation is non-reversible.
Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Band
This operation involves the placement of a band in the upper most part of the stomach. This creates a smaller upper pouch, leaving the remainder of the stomach below as the larger pouch. This procedure is commonly referred to as the ‘lap band’.
The procedure works as a result of the patient feeling satisfied after eating a comparatively smaller portion of food. Of course, patient hunger satisfaction depends entirely on the size of the gastric band. Our doctors will progressively reduce the size of the gastric band over a period of time. The surgery is reversible with digestion and absorption taking place as normal.
- The procedure is reversible
- Decreases the amount of calories consumed by reducing the amount of food the stomach can hold
- Due to the minimally invasive nature of the procedure, patients can leave hospital within 24 hours.
- The smallest chance of vitamin and mineral deficiencies.
- Complications can arise if the patient overeats.
- Weight loss can be slow and ineffective.
- The procedure requires a foreign object to exist within the body.
- The chance of success relies on the patient observing a strict postoperative diet.
Laparoscopic Roux en Y Gastric Bypass
This operation involves the use of medical stapling to create a smaller upper pouch, which restricts the amount of food the patient is able to consume. It is commonly referred to as a ‘gastric bypass’. Essentially, a large portion of the small bowel is bypassed, thus delaying food from mixing with digestive juices to avoid complete calorie absorption. This leads to malabsorption which in turn leads to a significant weight loss.
Much like the other procedures, this method significantly reduces the overall size of the stomach pouch, which in turn equates to a reduction in calories as less food in consumed. Furthermore, similarly to the vertical sleeve gastrectomy, the ‘gastric bypass’ facilitates a transformation of gut hormones, which stimulate appetite suppression and helps to neutralize the threat of type 2 diabetes.
- A proven and effective method of significant long-term weight loss in a vast amount of patients.
- Successfully restricts the amount of food.
- Induces desirable transformations regarding gut hormones.
- Very high success in curing type 2 Diabetes
- Likelihoods of vitamin and mineral deficiencies, namely vitamin B12, calcium and iron.
- The procedure demands a longer recovery time.
- Patients are obliged to follow strict dietary recommendations, as well as a long-running dependence on supplementary vitamins and minerals.
Patients are typically discharged from hospital the day after either a lap band or a gastric sleeve procedure. Those who undergo a gastric bypass will spend on an average two nights in the hospital. Regardless of the type of surgery patients undergo, they will be placed on a post-operative Bariatric liquid diet for the first two weeks.
RISKS AND COMPLICATIONS
Every surgery comes with its own set of risks and complications. Some are unique to the type of surgery you may be contemplating, whilst others will be particular to your individual disposition. A variety of factors, including your weight, age and medical history will play a significant role in determining your specific risks for bariatric surgery. Risks include:
- Abdominal hernias
- Deep vein thrombosis
- Enlarged heart
- Gall stones
- Nausea and vomiting
- Stretching of the stomach
Patients must remember that weight loss surgery is not cosmetic surgery!
It is the most effective way to lose weight and maintain it
The success of weight loss surgery is largely dependent on your long-term commitment to life style changes in diet, exercise and behaviour modification. A successful and healthy outcome depends on how strictly you follow your surgeon’s guidelines and recommendations.

Audiology is a branch of science that studies hearing, balance, and related disorders. Its practitioners, who treat those with hearing loss and proactively prevent related damage are audiologists. Employing various testing strategies (e.g. hearing tests, otoacoustic emission measurements, videonystagmography, and electrophysiologic tests), audiology aims to determine whether someone can hear within the normal range, and if not, which portions of hearing (high, middle, or low frequencies) are affected and to what degree. If an audiologist determines that a hearing loss or vestibular abnormality is present he or she will provide recommendations to a patient as to what options (e.g. hearing aid, cochlear implants, appropriate medical referrals) may be of assistance.
In addition to testing hearing, audiologists can also work with a wide range of clientele in rehabilitation (people with tinnitus, auditory processing disorders, users of cochlear implants and/or hearing aids), from pediatric populations to veterans and may perform assessment of tinnitus and the vestibular system.
Back Care Specialists
Back pain is pain felt in the back. Episodes of back pain may be acute, sub-acute, or chronic depending on the duration. The pain may be characterized as a dull ache, shooting or piercing pain, or a burning sensation. The pain may radiate into the arms and hands as well as the legs or feet, and may include paresthesia (tingling with no apparent cause), weakness or numbness in the legs and arms.
The anatomicclassification of back pain follows the segments of the spine: neck pain (cervical), middle back pain (thoracic), lower back pain (lumbar) or coccydynia (tailbone or sacral pain) with the lumbar vertebrae area most common for pain.
The pain may originate from the muscles, nerves, bones, joints or other structures in the vertebral column (spine). Internal structures such as the gallbladder and pancreas may also cause referred pain in the back.

Dermatological Conditions and treatments
American Hospital Dubai’s dermatologists have a wealth of experience in treating skin, hair and nail diseases and do so in an effective and compassionate manner. We strive to better a patient’s quality of life by diagnosing accurately and providing the necessary treatment to rid or manage the disorder. There are several common dermatological disorders:
Acne is a common skin condition that can affect people from their early teens into adulthood. The severity of acne depends on the individual and usually presents itself on the face, back and chest. Our dermatologists understand that it can cause serious reduced self-esteem and has the potential to be painful and itchy. The department has the best dermatologists in Dubai for the treatment of acne due to their utilization of unique treatment plans for every patient. Depending on the state of the acne, the dermatologist may offer advice on lifestyle changes, antibiotics, topical treatments or hormonal medicines. Treatment has proven to be incredibly effective when followed closely.
Another common condition is eczema which causes inflammation of the skin. Some symptoms may include a reddened rash, intense itching and open, weeping lesions when scratched. Though there is no cure for eczema, it can be managed and subdued. It may cause discomfort, physically and psychologically, for the patient. American Hospital Dubai’s dermatologists are highly skilled in creating treatment plans to assist in managing the condition. A patient may be prescribed corticosteroid medication, topical creams, moisturizers, antihistamines and antibiotics.
Psoriasis is alike in appearance and causes similar symptoms to eczema, including itching, scaly patches and lesions. Like eczema, there is no cure for psoriasis but it too can be managed effectively, even in severe cases. Our dermatologists will fabricate a individual treatment plan in order to successfully manage and soothe a patient’s psoriasis. Some treatments may include steroid creams, topical creams, medicated body washes and moisturizers.
Folliculitis is the inflammation of an individual’s follicles, causing small red bumps predominantly on the buttocks, scalp, chest, back and legs. Folliculitis is easily treated effectively and is not a chronic disorder. Our dermatologists may prescribe you antibiotics to clear the inflammation or offer advice on how to resolve it without medication.
American Hospital Dubai’s dermatology clinic also caters for patients suffering from less common disorders, which are sometimes more difficult to treat. However, with the in-depth knowledge of our dermatologists and the department’s advanced equipment, most dermatological cases are solved quickly and effectively.
Some treatments include:
- Skin patch testing for allergic contact dermatitis.
- Laser treatment for vitiligo and other skin diseases.
- Cryotherapy for sun damaged skin and warts.
- Excimer laser and UVB treatments for vitiligo, atopic dermatitis, alopecia and other skin diseases.
- Sclerotherapy for spider veins.
- Skin screening and mole mapping.
In the cases of more serious disorders, such as skin cancers, our expert dermatologists offer various highly effectual treatments. There are several different skin cancers, including Basal Cell Carcinoma, Squamous Cell Carcinoma and Malignant Melanoma. Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) Department of American Hospital Dubai
American Hospital Dubai’s Ear, Nose and Throat Center is considered as one of the best in the region, with some of the best ENT doctors in Dubai and the region running diagnosis, administering treatments, and performing surgical operations on a daily basis.
Also known as otorhinolaryngology, ENT specializes in the treatment and care of diseases of the ear, nose, throat and base of the skull, as well as surgical procedures for cancers and benign tumors of the head and neck.
ENT specilaties perform following surgeries and treatments at American Hospital Dubai Clinic
American Hospital Dubai’s team of expert ENT specialists includes some of the best audiologists in Dubai. Primarily in charge of diagnosis and treatment of hearing loss and balance disorders, they also treat with disorders in the auditory and vestibular system portion of the ear.
They make use of several testing strategies such as hearing tests, otoacoustic emission measurements, videonystagmography and electrophysiologic tests among other methods, in order to determine whether or not the patient’s hearing is sound, and if not, exactly how serious the damage is, which portion of the hearing is impacted by the disorder, and where the exact location of the lesion that is causing the hearing loss is.
If a patient is diagnosed with hearing loss or any form of vestibular abnormality such as Vertigo, the audiologist in charge will recommend treatment plans to assist with the healing.
Our audiologists treat a variety of patients that differ in ages. They also assist in the rehabilitation of disorders such as tinnitus, auditory processing, cochlear implants and hearing aid implementation.
Surgery of the Ear, including Cochlear Implants
The team of ENT specialists at the Ear, Nose and Throat Center of American Hospital Dubai features some of the finest ENT surgeons in Dubai. With extensive knowledge and skill in the field, they provide complete surgical options for ear infections and hearing loss.
The team also specialize in cochlear implants, which are small, complex electronic devices that can help individuals with severe hearing problems regain a sense of sound. They consist of a small external device that sits directly behind the ear, while another portion is surgically planted beneath the skin.
Cochlear implants provide a better option than traditional hearing aids. That is because traditional hearing aids increase sound volume, but do not necessarily affect the quality of speech understanding. In contrast, cochlear implants transmit a clarity of sound that is often highly needed for hearing impaired patients in order to understand speech and languages.
Following cochlear implant surgery, a rehabilitation program and training period are required in order to provide the patient with optimal hearing assistance.
Surgery of the Nasal Cavity and the Paranasal Sinuses
Most of our face constitutes of the oral cavity, the maxilla and the mandible, as well as the nose and its adjoined sinuses. Due to the proximity of each of these organs to one other, infection or diseases in one of them can easily contaminate other sections. As portals of nutrition and respiration, they serve very vital functions.
American Hospital Dubai’s ENT experts master endoscopic surgery and paranasal sinuses surgery that are sometimes performed to clear sinuses and remove growths and other polyps. They also serve to treat and remove cancers.
Surgery of Neoplastic Disease of the Nasal Cavity, Larynx and Hypopharynx
Neoplastic Disease is a form of cancer characterized by uncontrolled and chaotic proliferation of a group of cells. It can occur in any part of the body.
As one of the most complex parts of the human body, the head is also one of the most sensitive. The development of tumors in that region must be given the greatest importance and handled with the utmost care.
The ENT Center of American Hospital Dubai has a team of highly-trained surgeons that specialize in nasal cavity, larynx and hypopharynx neoplastic disease surgeries.
Surgery of the Thyroid Gland and Tumors of the Head and Neck
Head and neck surgeons are known as otolaryngologists or ENT physicians who have particular expertise in administering treatment plans for head and neck tumors, as well as endocrine gland disorders of the neck. These include benign and severe tumors and disorders of the thyroid and parathyroid glands.
Some of the symptoms exhibited by patients suffering from such diseases include hoarseness, swallowing difficulties, acute pain in the throat area especially when swallowing, weight loss, chronic ear pain without hearing loss, painless neck masses and noisy breathing.
As some of Dubai’s best ENT surgeons, our team administer treatments that include surgical procedures, radiation therapy and chemotherapy. As with every disorder, each treatment plan is meticulously developed following a thorough analysis of the patient’s medical record and history, as well as the exact location and stage of the disorder.
Surgeries of the thyroid gland and tumors of the head and neck sometimes require the opinion and expertise of a number of different physicians and therapists such as dieticians, physical therapists and speech language pathologists along with reconstructive surgeons, neurosurgeons and radiation and medical oncologists, among others.
Selected Facial Plastic Surgery
In most cases, facial plastic surgery is elective. It is reconstructive surgery that alters and modifies the facial features of the patient, and includes standard procedures such as rhinoplasty and lip injections.
However, some medical cases such as severe tumors and skin disorders might require reconstructive surgery to help the treated areas heal.
Whatever the case, the team of facial plastic surgery at the American Hospital Dubai pour the same care and effort into every single one of their procedures, continuously providing patients with the highest level of service and knowledge.
Salivary Gland Excisional Surgery
Located directly below the lower jaw, the submandibular gland is a salivary gland that ejects saliva through a tube towards the mouth. When the tubes that drain the saliva become blocked, usually due to stones formed by the saliva itself, it can cause an infection to occur in the salivary gland, which requires an operation to remove the submandibular gland.
The procedure is performed under general anesthesia.
Speech, Voice and Swallowing Therapy
Provided by experienced speech-language pathologists, this form of therapy treats articulation, language, stuttering, voice, cognition and swallowing disorders.

Before a surgery takes place, a patient must have a consultation with a physician within the hospital. This will help the surgeons understand how best to help the patient and which procedures to take.
A variety of factors influence whether or not a cancer patient is suitable for surgery. Variables such as size, stage, location and grade of the tumor can affect this decision. The overall fitness of the individual will also be taken into consideration, as operating on an objectively unhealthy patient could be hugely detrimental to the success of the operation.
Surgery, for a large number of patients, will be part of a combined solution involving other treatments. These will potentially involve radiation therapy and chemotherapy. To deter the spread of cancerous cells, these therapies will either be administered before or after the surgery, depending on the individual’s situation.
A specialized post-surgery aftercare team is on standby for all patients who undergo a procedure. The surgeon, who performed the operation, as well as the hospital’s nurses, closely monitors the individual in recovery, who will comfortably reside within a neighbouring department of the unit.
At the American Hospital Dubai, we have augmented a recovery programme, specifically devised to ensure a fast recovery with as few difficulties as possible. Our aim is to ensure a patient’s comfort, from their initial consultation to their discharge.
Geriatrics or geriatric medicine is a specialty that focuses on health care of elderly people. It aims to promote health by preventing and treating diseases and disabilities in older adults. There is no set age at which patients may be under the care of a geriatrician or geriatric physician, a physician who specializes in the care of elderly people. Rather, this decision is determined by the individual patient’s needs, and the availability of a specialist.

MEDICAL IMAGING and PET/ CT Scan
A breakthrough in the world of modern medicine, Medical Imaging is the overall process that leads to the creation of visual representation and scans of the inside of the body. Often required for clinical analysis and diagnosis, it allows doctors and physicians to assess the functions of internal organs and tissues and find signs of disorder or damage.
Often required by nearly every department at the American Hospital Dubai, it seeks to reveal the internal structures of the human body that are hidden by our skin and bones in order to assess and develop the correct treatment plans for all kinds of different conditions.
The first real use of medical imaging was to determine the anatomy of a normal internal body and physiology, in order to have to some grounds of comparison to determine and identify disorders and anomalies in ill individuals.
Medical Imaging holds many technologies under its umbrella, encompassing a number of modern developments that allow doctors to scan different parts of the body for a diverse number of reasons, and using a wide array of machines and tools.
American Hospital Dubai’s Medical Imaging department possesses the most advanced machinery and state-of-the-art equipment.
Medical Imaging – Scans or Diagnostic Test provided by AHDubai are as follows
Magnetic Resonance Imaging – MRI
Shaped like a small tunnel wide enough to fit one adult body, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, or MRI, is a physical examination that utilizes a magnetic field and radio wave energy to form pictures of organs and physiology beneath the human skin and bones.
At times more conclusive that other imaging processes such as ultrasounds or CT scans, MRIs feed different information about the structural formation of the human anatomy, often allowing physicians to identify anomalies and irregularities that cannot be assessed with other machinery.
The MRI test requires the human body to be placed inside a wide tube or tunnel, saving digital images and scans and storing them on the hospital database for closer inspection. The scans can be printed when needed.
Computed Tomography (640-slice CT Scan)
Sometimes referred to as Computerized Tomography or Computerized Axial Tomography (CAT Scan), Computed Tomography – commonly known as a CT Scan – is an imaging procedure that requires special x-ray equipment and tools to provide scans and photographs of the internal body structure.
CT Scans are commonly required for cancer patients in order to identify the cancer type and assess the damage to develop a solid treatment plan. Computed Tomography is also required to diagnose blood diseases and circulatory conditions like atherosclerosis, but also blood vessel aneurysms, blood clots, spinal disorders, kidney and bladder stone infections, abscesses, inflammatory diseases, overall injuries to the head and internal organs, and bone fractures and fissures.
A viably safe option for both younger patients as well as adults, the procedure requires the individual to lie still on a table as it navigates its way at the center of a large x-ray loop.
Advanced SPECT CT Scan
Short for Single-Photon Emission Computerized Tomography, a SPECT Scan is a different form of medical imaging that enables physicians and doctors to assess and analyze the functionality of different internal organs. As part of the spectrum of nuclear imaging tests, it utilizes a radioactive substance and specialized cameras to develop accurate 3D renderings of the organs beneath our skin.
An Advanced SPECT CT Scan is different from regular imagine tests in that it can present physicians with a chance to assess the function of organs as opposed to their shapes, such as the blood flow to the patient’s heart or the level of brain activity.
A technology that results in unique information about the inside of the body that often cannot be identified using other medical imaging tools, nuclear medicine is a type of imaging that injects limited bursts of radioactive materials known as radiotracers into the patient’s bloodstream. The radiotracers can also be inhaled or swallowed, depending on the patient’s medical condition and their history. The radiotracers then roam within the area under examination in order to feed energy in the form of gamma rays into a special camera and computer and form images and scans of the internal body.
One of the many benefits of nuclear medicine is that it enables physicians to detect and identify diseases and disorders at their earliest stages, giving patients a better chance at complete recovery.
Short for Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography, a PET/CT (or PEC-CT) is a combination of two different types of scanning methods, Positron Emission Tomography (or PET) and X-Ray Computed Tomography (or CT).
The integration of two different technologies allows physicians to collect different data from each device in a single session, developing sequential images that lead to a single, more complete and infinitely more accurate resulting image.
The Ultrasound, or Sonogram as it is sometimes referred to, is a type of medical imaging that utilizes high-frequency sound waves to perform closer inspections of the human organs and internal physiology.
Commonly used to examine vital organs such as the heart, blood vessels, kidneys, or even the liver, Ultrasound scans are also used to examine the fetus in the case of a pregnancy.
They require a special gel to be administered on the area that needs to be scanned, after which a hand-manipulated transducer will be applied to the same area to assess below-skin activity.
Ultrasounds do not expose patients to radiation.
Used to detect the earliest signs of breast cancer, when it is most treatable, a Mammography is a breast-imaging technology that requires low doses of x-rays
General X-Ray Radiology
Known as an X-Ray scan, General Radiography is a technology used to create internal images that help diagnose and detect anomalies in the bones and lungs of the patient, among other organ irregularities.
The tool requires the lowest level of radiation.
Limited Angiography and Interventional Radiology
A sub-specialty of Radiology, Interventional Radiology uses imaging equipment to enable physicians to diagnose internal irregularities and select subsequent treatment options.
Angiography, on the other hand, offers physicians the opportunity to perform closer inspections of internal blood vessels. The procedure requires a small catheter to be placed into the blood vessel, while x-ray dye is injected to enable doctors to examine the trajectory and detect any irregularities.
Fluoroscopic Studies – Gastrointestinal and Urogenital
A Fluoroscopy is a type of medical imaging that provides continuous x-ray images on a monitor. It requires an x-ray beam to be passed through the body to offer a detailed view of the inside of the patient’s body.

Neurosurgery / Brain and Spinal Surgery
Our team of surgeons at the American Hospital Dubai includes some of the world’s most prolific neurosurgeons, spinal surgeons and brain surgeons. Considered by many as leaders in their respective fields, they are skilled in the prevention, diagnosis, surgical treatment and rehabilitation of disorders that directly affect the nervous system. These might include the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves and extra-cranial cerebrovascular system.
Spinal discomfort can be causes by a great many things such as aging, improper body mechanics and spinal injuries, which in turn can cause symptoms such as back pain or leg pain and weakness.
Chronic back discomfort can sometimes be cured with specific treatments and physical therapy that target the inflamed area. But in some extreme cases, spinal damage can only be repaired through surgery.
The team of spinal surgeons at American Hospital Dubai will only consider surgery when the exact source of the pain and discomfort can be identified.
In the old days, the procedure called for an open surgery with long incisions that allowed the surgeon to access the spinal cord and analyze the backbone structure. However, as times have advanced and technologies have developed, spinal operations have become less invasive. Today, they require minimal incisions and shorter operation hours.
Cervical: Fusion and Micro-Discectomy
A cervical spinal fusion, also referred to as arthrodesis, is a procedure that merges specific bones in the neck. The surgery can be performed following several techniques:
By using bone grafts from the patient’s body or from a bone bank
By inserting metal implants that hold vertebrae together until the bone grows
By screwing metal plates into the bone in order to join adjacent vertebrae
By removing vertebrae and fusing the spine
By removing a spinal disc and linking the adjacent vertebrae
Micro-Discectomy on the other hand calls for the use of a special microscope to observe the disk and nerves. This causes less damage to the surrounding tissue as the surgeon is able to make smaller incisions.
Dorsal Spine Surgery & Spinal Fixation
Also known as Vertebral Fixation, Dorsal Spine Surgery or Spinal Fixation is a surgical procedure where doctors anchor several vertebrae together by using a vertebral fixation device. The purpose of the surgery is to decrease vertebral mobility in order to prevent damage and deterioration of the spinal cord and roots.
Lumbar: Micro-Lumbar Discectomy
Micro-Lumbar Discectomy is performed to remove portions of a herniated disc that are irritating or inflaming the nerve root. It requires the use of a microscope to improve both vision and lighting and allow the surgeon a clear view as he proceeds to remove the tissue and expose the bone. The result is more accurate with a higher chance of success.
American Dubai Hospital’s Neurosurgery Center is home to a number of neurosurgeons, brain surgeons and cranial surgeons that combine their skills and knowledge with cutting-edge technology to offer patients the highest level of service. The team members are considered some of the best in Dubai and the UAE as a whole, working closely together with a renowned group of therapists, nurses and other staff members to heal patients and manage diseases and disorders.
Cranial surgery or craniotomy calls for our surgeons to open the human skull and expose the brain in order to extract or treat infections, tumors and other cranial disorders.
While medical breakthroughs have yet to find the root of brain tumors, our doctors constantly push the limits and use their resources and skill to extract and remove brain tumors from the cranial area. Brain tumors are divided into primary and secondary tumors. Primary tumors are growths and cancers that originate in the brain, while secondary tumors start in another part of the human body before spreading to the brain.
Hydrocephalus occurs when there is an excessive accumulation of fluids in the cervical area or brain. The excess of CSF can cause harmful widening of the ventricles which in turn creates pressure on brain tissues that can be harmful. The surgery allows doctors to drain fluids from the brain to relieve the pressure.
Also known as Microvascular Surgery, Vascular Microsurgery is performed to repair human tissue damage caused by trauma, cancer or congenital deficiencies. It requires the use of a microscope to aid the surgeon in their quest to transplant tissue from one part of the body to the other in order to fuse amputation.
If successful, the operation can help heal wounds, restore function and regain form.
As some of the best neurosurgeons and brain surgeons in Dubai and the UAE, American Hospital Dubai’s team of physicians utilize functional neurosurgery to treat patients with neurological disorders such as epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease and chronic pain, among other severe conditions.
Thalamotomy for Tremors
Performed to help reduce tremor in the body, Thalamotomy is an operation that is administered on the opposite side of the infected area, which means that the surgery is performed on the left side when the infection is on the right and vice versa.
The surgery is recommended for patients suffering from Essential Tremor, but is also a viable option for tremors caused by Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis or post-trauma.
As with every single procedure administered by our neurosurgeons in Dubai and the UAE, the operation aims to help patients live a better life that is not dominated or controlled by medication and treatments.
Surgery for Epilepsy
Epilepsy surgeries vary in type and purpose.
The most common procedure is known as Resective Surgery or Resection or even Temporal Lobectomy. The surgeon will remove the part of the brain (usually the temporal lobe) that is causing the patient’s seizures and epileptic episodes.
Less popular epileptic surgeries include Callosotomy and Multiple Subpial Transections, procedures that typically use medical techniques to interrupt nerve pathways and cause a disconnection between the nerves and the brain to stop the seizures.
Nuclear medicine is a radiology subspecialty that applies radioisotopes in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.
- DIAGNOSIS: Utilizing radiation emitted from a patient’s body when a radiopharmaceutical is given intravenously or orally. The nuclear medicine images are obtained by the nuclear detectors (SPECT/CT or PET/CT), unlike X-ray or CT scan where the image is formed by an external radiation passing through the body.SPECT or PET scan fusing with low-dose CT scan displays the metabolism and anatomical structure of tumor or organs in a set of images simultaneously, which is one of the most effective imaging techniques today in the diagnosis, differentiation, and determining whether, where and how much degree the tumor has spread within the body. It is not only used in oncology, but also in diagnosis of infection site, neurological diseases, e.g. epilepsy, Alzheimer’s disease, and coronary heart disease in a special occasion.
- TREATMENT: Using specific radiopharmaceuticals to treat a benign or malignant disease, such as, hyperthyroidism, thyroid cancer, neuroblastoma, neuroendocrine tumor. Nuclear medicine image also helps planning of radiation therapy.
- CHECK TREATMENT RESPONSE: Assessing the treatment response by imaging the tumor site and whole body.

Oncology and Hematology
Oncologists deal with the research, identification and treatment of cancer – a collective term for the group of diseases distinguished by an uncharacteristic growth of unhealthy cells.
The primary task of an oncologist involves successfully diagnosing a cancer, also known as malignant tumours or neoplasms. Methods of diagnosis vary but typically include endoscopies, X-rays, CT scans, MRIs and ultrasounds. Cancer management solutions depend on the subtype of the cancer. At American Hospital Dubai, the department of oncology is paired with the hematology department.
Hematology concerns the study and treatment of blood related malignancies and diseases, such as leukaemia, sickle-cell anaemia, haemophilia and lymphoma. Hematological specialists largely treat parts of the body that are directly involved with the flow of blood cells, such as the spleen, lymphoid tissues and the lymph nodes. At AHD, the hematology department manages the pathology, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of a wide array of haematological ailments.
Cancer and Hematological Disease
Our Oncologists and Hematologists focus on preventative measures, including effective screening and early diagnosis to help reduce the suffering caused by cancer and hematological diseases. It is crucial to maintain regular check-ups, as often, symptoms can be subtle and will only appear when the cancer has grown to a large size. The earlier on a cancer is diagnosed, the more likely a treatment will be effective. With cancers, such as breast and prostate, a screening can actually detect cancerous growths called polyps, which can be removed and consequently eliminate the spread altogether.
Some of the more common signs of cancer include:
- General fatigue
- Wight loss
- Changes concerning the skin
- Bowel movement and bladder function
- Uncharacteristic bleeding
- Discolouration within the mouth
- Tissue lumping within various parts of the body
- Continuous indigestion
Screening And Early Detection Programmes
AHD oncology and hematology unit is the expert provider of wellness packages for men and women. It is recommended that men engage in regular check-ups from the age of 50. However, for individuals where a family history of cancer exists, an earlier start is recommended. For women aged 40 and above, yearly breast cancer screening, using mammograms, is recommended. Similarly, if a history of breast cancer exists, then earlier screening is advised.
Female Care Clinic
Our female care clinic offers detection programs for the following types of cancer:
Male Care Clinic
Our male care clinic offers detection programs for the following types of cancer:
Chemotherapy Certification Workshop
The Chemotherapy Certification Workshop takes place to help qualified nurses maintain and develop their skills in the administration and safety elements of chemotherapy management.
Staffs within the oncology and hematology department take part in compulsory monthly cancer talks and in-service sessions. As a result the team is fully up-to-date with the latest medical knowledge. This is a vital component to the continuation of world-class healthcare.
Tumour Board Meetings
Tumour Board Meetings are an effective way to approach treatment plans for cancer patients at AHD. During the monthly meetings, members of the diagnostic radiology, pathology, lab medicine, surgery, and hematology and oncology teams present facts and statistics concerning cancer patients. These multidisciplinary meetings ultimately allow teams to devise the most comprehensive and effective treatment plan for each individual patient.
Treatment modalities include:
- Targeted therapy
- Hormonal therapy
- Reconstructive surgeries
- Radiation Oncology Services
The Cancer Treatment Center is a leading facility dedicated to providing a comprehensive array of oncological and hematological services for cancers and blood disorders. The center offers screening, diagnosis, treatment and care for adults and pediatric patients, in both respective fields. Concerning hematology, all diseases, whether benign or malignant, including but not limited to clotting and bleeding problems, blood count issues, hereditary problems and hemochromatosis, will be professionally treated.
AHD has found a positive correlation between cancer survival rates and the development of effective treatment approaches. This involves an increase in the use of enhanced supportive care interventions, preventative measures and control activities.
In combination with traditional cancer treatment options, such as surgery, chemotherapy and palliative care, the Cancer Care Center offers a range of new therapies, opening up a variety of innovative treatment possibilities. As cancer therapies have become stronger, patients receiving these treatments subsequently require a more inclusive form of care.
A major shift in health care regarding the use of ambulatory treatment has occurred within AHD. Patients now have the option to receive complex cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy, within the comfort of their own homes as outpatients of the hospital. Naturally, given the often-aggressive nature of cancer therapies, there is a possibility that patients receiving such treatments may fall acutely ill. In the cases where complications arise, a wide range of services exists to ensure any complications are appropriately addressed, including full admissions as inpatients for comprehensive care.
A United Front Against Disease
As a multidisciplinary hospital, AHD features a scope of services that cater to the intricate needs of both adults and pediatric patients of the United Arab Emirates, throughout the entire journey of their recovery.
The Cancer Care Center is truly a centre of excellence, concerning diagnostic imaging. This unit is home to American Board Certified and highly qualified radiologists and doctors focusing on nuclear medicine, who utilize cutting-edge technology such as Pet-Ct, MRI, CT scans, Gamma camera and 3D ultrasound equipment.
Together, an outstanding team of pathologists, operating within the most advanced cytology and histopathology unit in the region, works alongside a team of highly specialized oncology surgeons to provide a fully inclusive range of surgical and medical procedures.
Additionally, a comprehensive pharmacy department ensures the timely delivery of traditional and new cancer medicines, consistently fulfilling post-operation requirements. However, nothing is more vital to the successful continuation of the pioneering cancer unit than the uninterrupted dedication, support and compassionate care that AHD staff have for the patients.

- Team Spirit
The Ophthalmology department at American Hospital Dubai includes a team of highly experienced physicians, surgeons and nurses. The department provides general ophthalmology and many other ophthalmic subspecialties.
Our medical staff provide patients with consultations, general examinations, accurate diagnosis, eye care treatment and corrective surgery. The team utilizes the latest technology in order to persevere in the hospital’s quest to provide every patient with the highest level of care and their strongest chance of getting their greatest visual potential.
General Ophthalmic Services
The hospital provides patients with a vast array of general ophthalmic services that include examinations to determine whether or not the individual’s eyesight meets the norm for their age, or if they require optical assistance.
The examinations can additionally diagnose anomalies in the eyes and other systemic diseases that can lead to reduced vision such as cataract, glaucoma, raised blood pressure or diabetes.
Subspecialty Ophthalmology Services
We offers specialized medical and surgical eye care for children of all ages. Services range from routine checkups to complicated surgeries. Specialty care is also available for adults with strabismus, also known as eye misalignment, and double vision.
Common pediatric eye conditions treated at American Hospital Dubai include strabismus, nystagmus, amblyopia, blocked tear ducts, congenital eye abnormalities, infections, visual development disorders, poor vision in infancy, Down syndrome, eyelid abnormalities and refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. Treatment is also available for children with ocular involvement of diabetes and juvenile arthritis.
Strabismus in adults can be a continuation from childhood or a new condition. Many adults consider the misalignment of their eyes to be a source of distraction in conversation and have to close one eye to avoid double vision. Common causes include trauma, thyroid eye disease, neurologic conditions and aging. Specific conditions include esotropia, exotropia, hypertropia, cranial nerve palsies and restricted eye movements.
The examination of a child’s eyes begins by providing a friendly and conversational atmosphere to put the child at ease and minimize their anxiety. A nurse will collect information about the reason for the visit and complete initial age-appropriate vision testing of the child. The doctor will meet with the family and evaluate the child’s vision, eye structures and alignment. Toys and videos are often used to draw attention and facilitate the examination. Dilating eye drops may be needed to complete some parts of the evaluation.
Specific treatments are individualized for each child and family to provide the best possible outcomes and may include glasses, eye patching, prescription medications and surgery.
A first time visit will typically take between one and two hours. This includes time for registration, examination, pupil dilation, explanations of the exam, questions and answers and check-out.
As for adults, an examination is completed to assess the specific eye misalignment and/or cause of double vision. Treatment may include eye muscle surgery to restore the balance of forces which align the eyes, updated glasses and/or eyeglass prisms. Eye misalignment and double vision can be improved in most cases.
Medical and Surgical Retina
We provide a comprehensive 24 hour medical and surgical retinal service. This includes treatment of diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, retinal detachments, globe trauma, complex cataracts requiring advanced techniques and surgery following complicated cataract surgery.
Other medical retinal problems such as retinal vascular disease, hereditary ocular diseases and posterior uveitis are treated. An array of state of the art lasers to treat medical retina diseases are available as well as the provision of intra-vitreal injections of anti-VEGF agents.
Surgical retinal treatments for retinal detachment, macula holes, epiretinal membranes, vitreo-macula traction, vitreous haemorrhage and advanced diabetic eye disease are provided.
Cataract Eye Care
A cataract is an ophthalmological condition that is caused by a clouding of the natural lens of the eye. This causes blurring of the vision, and reduced perception of color. Once the vision becomes worse and it interferes with day to day activities, a cataract extraction is performed in order to remove the cloudy lens and replace it with an artificial lens known as an Intraocular Lens (IOL). The IOL acts as a substitute for the eye’s missing lens. Large numbers of different types of IOL’s are available. Some IOL’s are “monofocal” and others have the ability to correct astigmatism (an irregular change in the shape of the cornea) or work as multifocal lenses allowing improved distance and reading vision. Different people require different types of IOLs and the choice of lenses is discussed in detail at the time of examination.
Glaucoma Eye Care
Glaucoma is a disorder of the intraocular pressure and the blood supply to the optic nerve of the eye that can result in a gradual loss of vision usually starting with a loss of peripheral vision.
The condition can be treated with eye drops, pills, laser surgery, traditional surgery, or even a combination of several treatments. The therapy depends on the severity of the condition as well as the medical history and patient profile.
Because a loss of vision caused by glaucoma is completely irreversible, all treatment plans aim to prevent loss of eyesight. When detected early, the condition can be managed and treated to prevent blindness.
The Ophthalmology department team encourages regular examination of eyesight in order to detect any problems at an early stage, and administer treatment plans and remedies as early as possible to increases any patient’s chances of a full recovery.

As board certified orthopedic surgeons, our specialists confidently diagnose, treat and operate within a variety of orthopedic subspecialties, including hand, wrist, shoulder and knee surgery, reconstruction and joint replacement, as well as trauma surgery. Our doctors perform the surgery using progressive minimally invasive techniques, such as arthroscopy and pioneering joint replacement systems.
We strive to consistently diagnose with precision to allow for an effective treatment. Our main focus is to deliver excellent results to the patient, with care, quality and success. Generally, diagnoses begin with a formal and detailed study of a patient’s medical history, as well as a thorough examination of their physical health. This will be followed by supplementary tests, using MRI and CT scanners. However, it is through the use of the arthroscope that a more detailed diagnosis is made.
Prior to the operation, our expert surgeons utilize minimally invasive techniques, such as arthroscopy, a procedure, which is used to examine, diagnose and consequently treat issues that occur within the joints. The procedure involves the surgeon inserting gracile tools fitted with fibre optic lighting into a minute incision. The probe is fitted with an extremely small camera, enabling the surgeon to determine the scope of the problem, without causing unnecessary damage to the patient.
For patients who require partial or full joint replacement, AHD uses only the most advanced solutions available, namely, the Nexgen Systems. These systems afford patients up to an impressive 155 degrees of joint movement, facilitating a return to mobile everyday routines. We are proud to give individuals the chance to live a dynamic and fully functional life.

A hospitalist is a physician who specializes exclusively in caring for hospitalized patients from admission to discharge. Hospitalists are a relatively new specialty in the USA and the term “hospitalist” was first mentioned in the New England Journal of Medicine in 1996. Since then, it has become the fastest growing specialty in the United States.
Most hospitalists are board certified in Internal Medicine. Hospitalists typically do not have an outpatient practice and therefore are able to devote their entire workday to the care of their hospitalized patients. If necessary, a patient can be seen several times a day and the hospitalist is always available on the ward to meet with family or other caregivers.
Hospitalists specialize in many aspects of a patient’s care and coordinate it by working closely with the subspecialty physicians or other support services involved. Since hospitalists are the main physician for a hospitalized patient and see him/her daily until discharge, they get to know their patients very well and therefore ensure a smoother hospital stay.

The Cancer Care Center at the American Hospital Dubai supports the most advanced radiation therapies available on a global level. The department’s team of high-skilled and qualified radiation experts consists of nurses, radiation therapists, physicists and dosimetrists who work together with radiation oncologists to design and develop treatment plans that obliterate the disease and infected areas and heal the patient within the possibilities.
Our Radiation Oncology department enforces a patient-centered approach to care and treatment, using the most recent medical advancements and cutting-edge technology to provide cancer patients with their best shot at a full recovery.
The Surgical Oncology department of the American Hospital Dubai focuses on the surgical management of tumors and cancerous growths. As one of the oldest successful cancer treatment options, surgical oncology often tackles the most advanced stages of cancer. Our nurses, doctors and surgical oncologists rely on their skill and knowledge to provide patients with their best treatment plans and perform surgeries to enhance their chances at beating cancer and surviving the disease.
Providing cancer treatments and care of the highest level to subjects with Hematological and Oncological disorders, the Pediatric Oncology department offers treatments to patients strictly below the age of 18 years. By providing assessment, diagnosis, treatment plans and surgical procedures, our team of pediatric oncologists work closely together to determine the best course of action for every patient while taking into account their diagnosis, detailed medical history and age.
The department’s approach is different from other oncology departments as it often refers patients to other departments and clinics within the hospital, such as the Cardiopulmonary division, the Medical Imaging branch or the hospital’s laboratories. The physicians will also make direct admissions for pediatric inpatient care, from the clinic to the pediatric ward.
Cancer treatments can often be painful and highly aggressive. This is where Palliative Care comes in. Helping patients ease into their treatment programs and deal with the painful side-effects of cancer surgeries and medical procedures, Palliative Care is administered in parallel with other cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy, to relieve the pain and improve the patient’s mental health and quality of life during their battle with cancer.
Cancer therapy is complicated on an emotional and physical level for the patient, which is why Palliative Care is commonly considered as an integral part of the treatment plans for serious diseases and life-threatening illnesses.
Palliative Care in no way acts as a replacement for primary treatment, but rather works in conjunction with medical therapies the patient is already receiving to alleviate pain and control the symptoms throughout the cancer journey.
Cancer Support Services
The American Hospital Dubai provides a comprehensive list of cancer support services for cancer patients and their families and loved ones, such as support groups, lodging assistance, nutritional care and dietary plans, and physical and emotional therapy.

PEDIATRIC ENDOCRINOLOGY – Diabetic treatment for Kids
Pediatric endocrinology is a medical sub-specialty that deals with disorders of the endocrine glands, such as variations of the physical growth and sexual development of a child, diabetes, and other hormonal conditions.
Hormones play a major role in how we develop and grow, regulate sugar, metabolize food and perform other habitual bodily functions. The endocrine system, which includes the pituitary gland, thyroid gland, adrenal gland and pancreas, uses these hormones to correspond with the body. Inconsistencies in the glands and hormonal production and release can cause irregularities in the body that can lead to endocrinology condition.
The American Hospital Dubai’s Pediatric Endocrinology department is one of the best in the region, offering the highest level of service in endocrinology and diabetic treatments in Dubai and the region.
The Glands of the Endocrine System
The network of glands produces and releases hormones that affect some of our body’s main functions, such as our ability to transform calories into energy to power our cells and organs.
The glands release hormones into our bloodstream, hormones that travel through our blood to other cells and help control and maintain our bodily functions. Our endocrine system also influences vital functions such as our heartbeats, our bone and tissue growth and our body’s fertility.
This, in turn, can prevent or encourage our body to develop conditions such as diabetes, thyroid disease, growth disorders, sexual dysfunction and calcium shortage, among a multitude of other severe hormonal disorders.
Our endocrinal glands include:
- Adrenal glands
- Islet cells in the pancreas
- Pineal gland
- Pituitary gland
The slightest malfunction in any of these glands or their functions can throw our hormonal system off balance and lead to endocrinal disorders such as Diabetes.
Pediatric Endocrine Disorder Causes
Typically, endocrine disorders are the result of one of two things: a malfunction in one of the glands that causes an excess or a shortage of any hormone, which can in turn result in a hormonal imbalance. Or the development of an outside growth or tumor that might affect the body’s hormone level and gland functions.
Our body is programmed to adapt and fight all sorts of imbalances and diseases, so the endocrine’s feedback system usually controls the level of hormones in our bloodstream. However, it is when our body is unable to correct or balance our hormonal levels that disorders start to occur.
This can be caused by several reasons like outside diseases and conditions, problems in the endocrine system, gland malfunction and hormone shortage or excess, genetic disorders and transmitted diseases, infections in our system, physical injuries either directly or indirectly to a gland, or the existence of a tumor on one of the glands.
Pediatric Endocrine Disorder Types
At the American Hospital Dubai, our most common type of endocrine disorder is Diabetes, specifically Type 1, which is where half of our Pediatric Endocrinology resources go. However, endocrine diseases are in no way limited to that disorder. Examples of other endocrine disorders include:
Growth Disorders – These types of disorders have a direct effect on a child’s body growth and can include stunted or excessive growth, atrophies and gigantism. The pituitary gland, which produces the hormones directly responsible for body growth, can sometimes release and excessive amounts of hormone which can lead the child’s body to grow at an abnormal rate. In contrast, if the gland releases lower hormone levels than the norm, the child’s growth can be severely stunted.
Intersex Disorders – Often resulting in sexual ambiguity, intersex disorders can cause malfunctions in the development of a child’s sexual and gender hormones.
Hypoglycemia – This type of disorder occurs when blood glucose level becomes so low that the person is too weak to attend to their own needs.
Diabetes – This disorder impacts the body’s ability to produce or respond to the hormone insulin, resulting in an abnormal metabolism of carbohydrates and elevated levels of glucose in the blood and urine.
Adrenal Insufficiency – The shortage of cortisol release by the adrenal gland can result in the body’s deterioration and lead to fatigue, nausea, indigestion, dehydration and skin mutation, among other symptoms.
Hyperthyroidism – When the thyroid gland suffers from excess hormone release, it can lead to severe weight loss, arrhythmia, profuse sweating and anxiety.
Hypothyroidism – If, on the contrary, the thyroid gland produces very low levels of the thyroid hormone, it can lead to fatigue, constipation, dry skin and depression.
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome – Also known as PCOS, it is caused by the excessive production of androgens that in turn interfere with the development of eggs and their subsequent release in female ovaries, which in turn can cause severe cases of infertility.
Precocious Puberty – In some cases, glands can interfere with the normal development of puberty and result in a premature release of hormones in the body.
Testing for Endocrine Disease

Dealing with the symptoms of any painful or serious illness is difficult. However, special care is available to make you more comfortable. It’s called palliative care. You can receive palliative care at the same time that you’re receiving treatments for your illness. Its primary purpose is to relieve the pain and other symptoms you are experiencing to improve your quality of life. Palliative care is a central part of treatment for serious or life threatening illnesses. The information in this brochure will help you understand how you or someone close to you can benefit from this type of care.
WHAT IS PALLIATIVE CARE?
Palliative care is comprehensive treatment of the discomfort, symptoms and stress brought on by serious illness. It does not replace your primary treatment; palliative care works in conjunction with the primary treatment you are already receiving. The goal is to prevent and ease suffering and improve your quality of life.
PALLIATIVE CARE IS COMPREHENSIVE CARE DESIGNED ESPECIALLY FOR YOUR NEEDS
Palliative care can improve your quality of life in a variety of ways. Together with your primary health care provider, your palliative care team combines vigorous pain and symptom control into every part of your treatment.
Team members spend as much time with you and your family as it takes to help you fully understand your condition, care options and other needs. They also make sure you experience a smooth transition between the hospital and other services, such as home care or nursing facilities. This results in well-planned, complete treatment for all of your symptoms throughout your illness – treatment that takes care of you in your present condition and anticipates your future needs.
PALLIATIVE CARE STRIVES TO PROVIDE YOU WITH
- Expert treatment of pain and other symptoms so you can get the best relief possible.
- Open discussion about treatment choices, including treatment for your disease and management of your symptoms.
- Coordination of your care with all of your health care providers.
- Emotional support for you and your family.
PALLIATIVE CARE CAN BE VERY EFFECTIVE
Researchers have studied the positive effects palliative care has on patients. Recent studies show that patients who receive palliative care report improvement in:
- Pain and other distressing symptoms, such as nausea or shortness of breath.
- Communication with their health care providers and family members.
- Emotional support.
OTHER STUDIES ALSO SHOW THAT PALLIATIVE CARE:
- Ensures that care is more in line with patients’ wishes.
- Meets the emotional and spiritual needs of patients.
A TEAM APPROACH TO PATIENT-CENTERED CARE
Palliative care is provided by a team of specialists that may include:
- Palliative care doctors
- Palliative care nurses
- Counselors and others
SPECIAL CARE THAT SUPPORTS YOU AND YOUR WISHES
Palliative care supports you and those who love you by maximizing your comfort. It also helps you set goals for the future that lead to a meaningful, enjoyable life while you get treatment for your illness.
HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOU NEED PALLIATIVE CARE?
Many adults living with illnesses such as cancer, heart disease, advanced dementia, lung disease, kidney failure, cystic fibrosis, among others, experience physical symptoms and emotional distress related to their diseases. Sometimes these symptoms are related to the medical treatments they are receiving. You may want to consider palliative care if you or your loved one:
- Suffers from pain or other symptoms due to any serious illness/life limiting illness
- Experiences physical or emotional pain that is not under control.
- Needs help understanding your situation and coordinating your care.
HOW PALLIATIVE CARE IS DIFFERENT
Palliative care is available to you at any time during your illness. Remember that you can receive palliative care at the same time you receive treatments that are meant to cure your illness. Its availability does not depend upon whether or not your condition can be cured. The goal is to make you as comfortable as possible and improve your quality of life.
START PALLIATIVE CARE AS SOON AS YOU NEED IT
It’s never too early to start palliative care. In fact, palliative care occurs at the same time as all other treatments for your illness and does not depend upon the course of your disease.
There is no reason to wait. Serious illnesses and their treatments can cause exhaustion, anxiety and depression.
Palliative care teams understand that pain and other symptoms affect your quality of life and can leave you lacking the energy or motivation to pursue the things you enjoy. They also know that the stress of what you’re going through can have a big impact on your family. And they can assist you and your loved ones as you cope with the difficult experience.
Getting palliative care is as easy as asking for it In most cases, palliative care is provided in the hospital. The process begins when either your health care provider refers you to the palliative care team or you ask your health care provider for a referral.
At the American Hospital Dubai, palliative care is provided by a team of professionals, including medical and nursing specialists, pharmacists, nutritionists, clergy and others.

The Sleep Medicine is a young and growing clinical discipline of the world’s medical community. There are approximately about 150 different sleep/wake disorders that are commonly known in the world. A sleep disorders can lead to various and significant health problems that may be potentially dangerous or fatal to the patient. It also reduces the quality of life of a patient having the associated sleep disorder.
The Sleep Related Disorder (SRD) studies has become the integral part of a routine patient screening for history and physical assessment especially on patients suspected for sleep disorders. The incidence of sleep related disorders are increasing with estimated from 5% to 25% positive SRD in the male population and slightly lower with the female population.
There are daily clinical signs and symptoms that highlights the significance for investigation of sleep related disorders such as;

The Sports Medicine Center at the American Hospital Dubai is a multidisciplinary team that provides comprehensive services and care – even for acute sports injuries. From imaging/diagnostics to a range of specialist treatments and advanced rehabilitation, everything you need is available under one roof.
The Center sees patients with sports injuries of all the major joints. The ability to see inside the joint is vital. Arthroscopy is a surgical procedure used by orthopedic surgeons to visualize, diagnose, and treat problems inside a joint. The department has the most advanced arthroscopy equipment, highly specialized surgeons and, just as importantly, the team to manage the rehabilitation process, which helps to keep patients playing.
In an arthroscopic examination, an orthopedic surgeon makes a small incision in the patient’s skin and then inserts pencil-sized instruments that contain a small lens and lighting system to magnify and illuminate the structures inside the joint. Light is transmitted through fiber optics to the end of the arthroscope that is inserted into the joint.
By attaching the arthroscope to a miniature camera, the surgeon is able to see the interior of the joint through this very small incision rather than a large incision needed for surgery.
The camera attached to the arthroscope displays the image of the joint on a screen, allowing the surgeon to look, for example, throughout the knee. This lets the surgeon see the cartilage, ligaments, and meniscus. The surgeon can determine the amount or type of injury and then repair or correct the problem, if it is necessary.
Through the arthroscope, a final diagnosis is made, which may be more accurate than through ‘open’ surgery or from X-ray studies. Although the inside of nearly all joints can be viewed with an arthroscope, six joints are most frequently examined with this instrument; these include the knee, shoulder, elbow, ankle, hip, and wrist.
