Dialysis Unit meets rising demand amongst kidney disease sufferers
Kidney disease is a serious health issue worldwide - in the US alone, one in
nine adults has chronic kidney disease and another 20 million people are at
risk - particularly the patients who suffer from diabetes, hypertension or have
a family history of kidney disease. There is relatively little local data on
the prevalence and incidence of kidney disease in the Middle East region.
However, two of the highest risk factors associated with kidney disease are
diabetes and hypertension, both of which are very common in the UAE and across
the region. This strongly suggests that the region is likely to see a greater
incidence of kidney disease and therefore greater demand for dialysis, in
future.
In response to this growing need, the American Hospital Dubai recently
commissioned a new, state of the art Dialysis Unit. The hospital opened the
unit by inviting existing dialysis patients and those suffering from kidney
disease and who may require dialysis in future, along with their families, to
visit the unit.
The Dialysis Unit team
Dr. Fahed Kouli, who is an American Board Certified specialist both in Internal
Medicine and Nephrology, joined American Hospital Dubai from the prestigious
John Hopkins University Medical School in the U.S.. He is a specialist in
Nephrology, American Board Certified in Internal Medicine, University of New
York at Buffalo 1993; American Board Certified in Nephrology, John Hopkins
University, Baltimore, MD 1997. Director of "Porter Dialysis unit" in
Baltimore, Maryland 2000-2003.
In addition to providing dialysis services, the team at the Dialysis Unit helps
inform and educate patients and all family members about the lifestyle impact
of kidney disease and its treatment. For those patients with conditions, which
may lead to chronic kidney failure or require dialysis treatment, the new unit
will help prepare them by monitoring and controlling other related health
issues, such as blood pressure management, anemia and nutrition. Dr Fahed
Kouli, Head of the Dialysis Unit, adds a note of advice: "We need to educate
the public, patients - and even general practitioners - about kidney disease,
as the key to successful prevention and treatment is screening and early
detection/treatment. Most kidney disease patients have few, if any, symptoms
until it is too late; and screening is a quick and simple process that should
be undertaken about once a year, especially in high risk patients," he says.
New Dialysis Unit - speed and comfort
The unit has four private treatment rooms, which are bright and comfortable, and
uses high flux dialyzers that in addition to providing better treatment speed
up the process of dialysis and reduce patient treatment time. American Hospital
Dubai's new dialysis unit operates to the highest U.S. standards - Dialysis
Outcomes and Quality Initiative (DOQI) - which mean that the unit works with
patients on all aspects of dialysis treatment, including nutrition and overall
lifestyle.
